Catastrophic events such as the Bhopal, India tragedy and rising
incidences of cancer in areas neighboring industrial facilities
have heightened concern over the use of toxic chemicals in
manufacturing and industry, particularly with respect to long-term
exposure. While legislation and publicity have reduced the use of
some chemicals, risks remain that continue to threaten the health
of individuals worldwide. Based on the authors' research conducted
through their development of a program in Sao Paulo, Brazil, Toxic
Chemicals: Risk Prevention Through Use Reduction examines various
toxicity factors and proposes a plan to reduce the toxic impact of
these hazardous substances. Explores all factors that contribute to
toxicity The book begins by exploring the history of toxic chemical
release reporting programs, a trend growing out of the Bhopal
tragedy. It surveys their impact both in the United States through
the Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) program and in the 29 other
countries that maintain similar programs. Then, with the goal of
developing a rational method of prioritizing toxic chemicals for
reduction, the authors discuss mobility, persistence, and
bioconcentration adjustment factors and present a method for
integrating all of these factors to estimate the relative impact of
chemical release. Compares alternate emphases in existing programs
The book describes programs that concentrate on reducing the
release of chemicals with the greatest adverse toxic impact and
those that require companies to prepare pollution prevention plans
and set goals for reducing use or release. It also examines
technical assistance programs that help companies search for
alternative chemicals to use or process changes that eliminate the
use of toxic chemicals. In addition, it explores alternative
market-based approaches for achieving environmental protection.
Presents a workable plan for the future In the final chapters, the
authors lay out their proposed program for reducing the use of
toxic chemicals. This plan builds on the existing TRI program and
uses lessons learned from this and other programs. The combined
research assembled by the authors and their multifaceted approach
to the issue of chemical toxicity enables companies and policy
makers to move to the next level of toxic chemical use reduction,
resulting in a safer environment for future generations.

Hotel Housekeeping Management: Changing trends and developments is
a comprehensive hands-on guide to this vital role in the operation
of a hotel. Author Jayanti Jayanti uses her own experiences from
both her industry experiences with Oberoi hotels and her academic
teaching to create this user friendly and practical guide. With
insights from international industry experts and real-life case
studies, it provides the reader with a comprehensive how-to guide
to all elements of this essential role as well as the theoretical
foundations and operational techniques. It covers issues and areas
such as: • Budgeting and controlling expenditure • Managing
personnel, including contracts and outsourcing • Guestroom types,
design and trends • Sustainability issues including ecotels and
energy conservation • Hotel housekeeping software and analytics A
vital resource for all students of hospitality management,
housekeeping professionals, and those undertaking apprenticeships.
Includes chapters on key aspects of second language assessment such
as test construct, diagnosis, exam design, and the growing range of
public policy, social and ethical issues. Each of the contributors
is an expert in their area; some are established names while others
are talented newcomers to the field. The chapters present new
research or perspectives on traditional concerns such as test
quality; fairness and bias; the testing of different language
skills; the needs of different groups of examinees, including
English language learners who need to take content tests in
English; and the use of language assessments for gate-keeping
purposes. This volume represents the best of current practice in
second language assessment, demonstrating how language assessment
is informed by and engages with neighbouring areas of applied
linguistics such as technology and language corpora.

This book offers a practical, application-oriented introduction to
computational fluid dynamics (CFD), with a focus on the concepts
and principles encountered when using CFD in industry. Presuming no
more knowledge than college-level understanding of the core
subjects, the book puts together all the necessary topics to give
the reader a comprehensive introduction to CFD. It includes
discussion of the derivation of equations, grid generation and
solution algorithms for compressible, incompressible and hypersonic
flows. The final two chapters of the book are intended for the more
advanced user. In the penultimate chapter, the special difficulties
that arise while solving practical problems are addressed.
Distinction is made between complications arising out of
geometrical complexity and those arising out of the complexity of
the physics (and chemistry) of the problem. The last chapter
contains a brief discussion of what can be considered as the Holy
Grail of CFD, namely, finding the optimal design of a fluid flow
component. A number of problems are given at the end of each
chapter to reinforce the concepts and ideas discussed in that
chapter. CFD has come of age and is widely used in industry as well
as in academia as an analytical tool to investigate a wide range of
fluid flow problems. This book is written for two groups: for those
students who are encountering CFD for the first time in the form of
a taught lecture course, and for those practising engineers and
scientists who are already using CFD as an analysis tool in their
professions but would like to deepen and broaden their
understanding of the subject.
This is the time for laying the foundation of wisdom within your
own consciousness. To become aware of the wise self within, to
nurture it until it grows into a tree of strength that will provide
fruit not only for you, but will help to inspire all those you come
into contact with everyday. Gaining in knowledge about your own
role and understanding your relationship with God will enable you
to do the things that you need to do, so that a wiser civilization,
and a new and better world, can be created. Today is the time to
start receiving these treasures from God.
This volume focuses on the principles and practices of second
language assessment while considering its impact on society. Part I
deals with the conceptual foundations of second language
assessment, and Part II addresses the theory and practice of
assessing different second language skills. Part III examines the
challenges and opportunities of second language assessment in a
range of contexts. Part IV examines key issues.
Second language assessment is ubiquitous. It has found its way from
education into questions about access to professions and migration.
This volume focuses on the main debates and research advances in
second language assessment in the last fifty years or so, showing
the influence of linguistics, politics, philosophy, psychology,
sociology, and psychometrics. There are four parts which, when
taken together, address the principles and practices of second
language assessment while considering its impact on society. Read
separately, each part addresses a different aspect of the field.
Part I deals with the conceptual foundations of second language
assessment with chapters on the purposes of assessment, and
standards and frameworks, as well as matters of scoring, quality
assurance, and test validation. Part II addresses the theory and
practice of assessing different second language skills including
aspects like intercultural competence and fluency. Part III
examines the challenges and opportunities of second language
assessment in a range of contexts. In addition to chapters on
second language assessment on a national scale, there are chapters
on learning-oriented assessment, as well as the uses of second
language assessment in the workplace and for migration. Part IV
examines a selection of important issues in the field that deserve
attention. These include the alignment of language examinations to
external frameworks, the increasing use of technology to both
deliver and score second language tests, the responsibilities
associated with assessing test takers with special needs, the
concept of 'voice' in second language assessment, and assessment
literacy for teachers and other test and score users.
